ABSTRACT

Only few studies have focus on animals that received Pilocarpine (Pilo) and did not develop behavioral status epilepticus (SE) and, whether they may become epileptic in the model's chronic phase. Previews works observed mossy fiber sprouting in the hippocampus of Non-SE (NSE) rats, while others observed spontaneous and recurrent seizures (SRS) 6 - 8 months after animals received Pilo. It is known that neuronal excitability is influenced by female hormones, as well as, the occurrence of SE in castrated and non-castrated female rats. However, it is not known whether females that received Pilo and did not show SE, may have SRS. The aim of this work was to investigate whether castrated and non-castrated female rats that did not show behavioral SE after Pilo, will develop SRS in the following one-year. For that, animals received 360 mg/kg of Pilo and were video monitored for 12 months. SE females from castrated and non-castrated groups became epileptic since the first month after drug injection. Epileptic behaviors were identified watching video monitoring recordings in the fast speed. Castrated and Non castrated NSE animals showed behaviors resembling seizures described by Racine Scale stages 1 - 3. Motor alterations showed by NSE groups could be observed only when recordings were analyzed in slow speed. In addition, behavioral manifestations as, rhythmic head movements, sudden head movements, whole body movements and immobility were also observed in both, SE and NSE groups. We concluded that NSE female rats may have become epileptic. Adding to it, slow speed analysis of motor alterations was essential for the observation of NSE findings, which suggests that possibly many motor alterations have been underestimated in epilepsy experimental research.


Poucos são os estudos com foco em animais que receberam Pilocarpina (Pilo) e não desenvolveram status epilepticus (SE) comportamental e, se os mesmos se tornarão epilépticos na fase crônica do modelo. Autores observaram o brotamento das fibras musgosas no hipocampo de ratos Não-SE (NSE), enquanto outros observaram crises espontâneas e recorrentes (CER) 6 - 8 meses após receberam a droga. A excitabilidade neuronal é influenciada pelos hormônios femininos e, da mesma forma, a ocorrência de SE em ratas castradas e não-castradas. Entretanto, não é sabido se as fêmeas que não apresentam SE terão CER. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar se fêmeas castradas e não castradas que não tiveram SE comportamental após a injeção de Pilo desenvolverão CER dentro de um ano. Para isto, os animais receberam 360 mg/kg de Pilo e foram videomonitorados por 12 meses. As fêmeas SE castradas e não-castradas se tornaram epilépticas desde o primeiro mês pós Pilo. O comportamento epiléptico foi identificado assistindo as gravações na velocidade rápida. As fêmeas NSE castradas e não-castradas apresentaram comportamentos similares aos estágios 1 - 3 da Escala de Racine. As alterações motoras nestes grupos (NSE) foram observadas apenas quando as videomonitoração foi analisada na velocidade lenta. Além destas, manifestações comportamentais como movimentos rítmicos da cabeça, movimentos súbitos da cabeça, movimentos de todo o corpo e imobilidade também foram observadas em ambos grupos, SE e NSE. Concluímos que as fêmeas NE podem ter se tornado epilépticas. Adicionado a isto, a análise das alterações motoras na velocidade lenta foi essencial para a observação dos achados das fêmeas NSE, o que sugere que possivelmente muitas alterações motoras têm sido subestimados na pesquisa em epilepsia experimental.

ABSTRACT

Recent studies have developed simple techniques for monitoring and assessing sleep. However, several issues remain to be solved for example high-cost sensor and algorithm as a home-use device. In this study, we aimed to develop an inexpensive and simple sleep monitoring system using a camera and video processing. Polysomnography (PSG) recordings were performed in six subjects for four consecutive nights. Subjects' body movements were simultaneously recorded by the web camera. Body movement was extracted by video processing from the video data and fi ve parameters were calculated for machine learning. Four sleep stages (WAKE, LIGHT, DEEP and REM) were estimated by applying these fi ve parameters to a support vector machine. The overall estimation accuracy was 70.3 ± 11.3% with the highest accuracy for DEEP (82.8 ± 4.7%) and the lowest for LIGHT (53.0 ± 4.0%) compared with correct sleep stages manually scored on PSG data by a sleep technician. Estimation accuracy for REM sleep was 68.0 ± 6.8%. The kappa was 0.19 ± 0.04 for all subjects. The present non-contact sleep monitoring system showed suffi cient accuracy in sleep stage estimation with REM sleep detection being accomplished. Low-cost computing power of this system can be advantageous for mobile application and modularization into home-device.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of application of video surveillance system for medical staff in the prevention and control of Ebola treatment center (ETC). Methods The high-definition camera installed in the polluted area 100 beds of 24 wards, semi polluted area ring corridor, wear off gowns and other areas without blind spot. Video data and information were collected. The experts of steering group and medical personnel were on duty of video monitoring 24 hours in the medical duty room. They monitored the situation of frontline staff in medical care, whether wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), logistics and transportation problems encountered in the work, and corrected and reminded. Results From December 2015 to January 2014, by checking 182 people on the first-line staff including doctors, nurses and nursing workers, 239 problems of 4 categories were found. The PPE problems was 147 cases (61.50%), while perform operation process issue 35 cases (14.64%), flow logistics distribution problems 31 cases (12.97%), the others 26 cases (10.88%). All the problems were given a timely reminder. There was no infections among medical team. Conclusion Video surveillance system could help medical staff to prevent and control infection, and reduce the risk of infection.

ABSTRACT

The global and regional impacts of climate change are having devastating consequences on the coral reef ecosystems of the Caribbean. Long term monitoring are important tool for assessing reef health. Monitoring was established in 2000 in the Bahamas, Belize and Jamaica. Following the pilot project, the program was institutionalized in Jamaica and monitoring was conducted on eight occasions from 2000 to 2010. Monkey Island and “Gorgo City” near Discovery Bay (both on the north coast) and Southeast Cay at Port Royal on the south coast were selected. Macroalgae dominated the benthic substrate. Monkey Island and “Gorgo City” had the highest coral cover. Porites astreoides, Montastraea spp., Porites porities, Siderastrea siderea, and Agaricia agaricites were the most common species. Data from this programme have been used in local and regional coral reef assessment and management initiatives.


Los impactos regionales y globales del cambio climático están teniendo consecuencias devastadoras en los ecosistemas de arrecifes de coral en el Caribe. Se establecieron monitoreos en el 2000 en Las Bahamas, Belice y Jamaica. Siguiendo el proyecto piloto, el programa se institucionalizó en Jamaica y el monitoreo se llevó a cabo en ocho ocasiones del 2000 al 2010. Se seleccionaron los sitios: Isla Monkey, “Ciudad Gorgo “ cerca de la Bahía Discovery (ambos en la costa norte) y el Cayo Sureste en el Puerto Royal en el sur de la costa. Las macroalgas dominaban el sustrato bentónico. Isla Monkey y “Ciudad Gorgo” tuvieron la mayor cobertura de coral. Porites astreoides, Montastraea spp, Porites porities, Siderastrea siderea, y Agaricia agaricites representan las especies de corales más frecuentes. Los datos de este programa se han utilizado en las iniciativas de evaluación y manejo de arrecifes de coral locales y regionales.

ABSTRACT

Inhibitory motor seizure or ictal hemiparesis is very infrequent seizure type and sometimes difficult to differentiate from acute cerebrovascular disease. We report two patients with hemiparesis as manifestation of status epilepticus. One patient showed epileptic discharge on midline frontocentral region by EEG-Video monitoring, another patient showed continuous slowing wave associated with hyperperfusion findings of brain SPECT on left fronto-temporo-parietal region. Both patients showed normal brain imaging.

Objective To develop a neonate remote visiting & tracing system with present wireless network and neonate RFID system.Methods Standard MPEG-4 images from real-time monitoring were obtained by using multilevel video monitoring system based on wireless network.Dynamic IP support to video server was realized under various kinds of network bandwidth.Result Parents at home could see their neonates in hospital through Internet network.They also could observe the whole process of the treatment.If the doctor went on errands to other city,through the web they could know the status of the infant and give suggests at any moment.Conclusion Remote visiting & tracing system in neonate department is a significant reference to hospitals of the same kind.

ABSTRACT

A 39-year-old woman has had several episodes of transient right hemiplegia. On neurological examination during the ictal period she had alert consciousness with aphasia, head and eyeball deviation to the right side, and right hemiplegia. Brain MRI was normal. EEG-video monitoring of ictal period showed continuous ictal discharge in the midline frontocentral area coincided with right hemiplegia. After injection of diazepam, the ictal discharge and right hemiplegia disappeared. We report a case of status epilepticus characterized by ictal hemiplegia.

ABSTRACT

Conventional laparoscopic surgery requires definite leaming curve, and must be converted to an open procedure in the event of a large vessel injury. The usage of carbon dioxide gas for securing operative field is generally accepted, but such field rapidly disappears when air pressure decreases. To overcome these shortcomings without sacrificing advantages of excellent cosmetic results and reduced wound pain of laparoscopy without using the gas insufflation, various urologic operations utilizing incisions 2 to 5 cm long were made without cutting abdominal musculature with the help of specially designed retractors and video systems used in conventional laparoscopic surgery. It can be performed in familiar anatomical settings and all the surgical skills of open procedures can be utilized. We have performed 3 living donor nephrectomies, 6 simple nephrectomies, 2 partial nephrectomies, 9 pyeloplasties, 16 ureterolithotomies, 1 ureteroureterostomy, and 2 renal cyst marsupializations. Mean operative time and hospital stay were 185 minutes and 7 days for living donor nephrectomies, 150 minutes and 6.7 days for simple nephrectomies, 255 minutes and 7.5 days for partial nephrectomies, 130 minutes and 4.8 days for pyeloplasties, 85 minutes and 4.1 days for ureterolithotomies, 90 minutes and 5 days for ureteroureterostomy, and 75 minutes and 5.5 days for renal cyst marsupializations, respectively. Immediate wound pain was severe probably due to intense traction of abdominal musculature, but the recovery of such pain was remarkably rapid. No postoperative wound paresthesia was seen and early discharge was possible. In conclusion, the gasless retroperitoneoscopically assisted surgery can take advantage of both conventional open and laparoscopic surgery, and it can be a valid option to conventional open surgery for any surgical procedures in retroperitoneum, including kidney, ureter, and bladder.
